Summary:Coding processes involved in storing and retrieving information in event, simple associative, and serial associative learning have been examined in experiments and literature reviews. A new technique for identifying and analyzing trainee-determined coding units in serial learning has been developed, and has shown that serial learning cannot be represented by traditional continuous-process theories, but instead must be treated by an organizational model, probably a hierarchy of codes. A number of studies have extended and refined the hypothesis that encoding variability during learning, as contrasted with constant encoding over repetitions, is beneficial for long-term retention.
