Summary: | Measurements of the mass absorption index of different types of atmospheric aerosol particles combined with corresponding data on the density give an insight in the absorption coefficient of the present particles. The absorption in the short wavelength range produces heating, in the infrared cooling of the air. The absorption depends upon the relative humidity and upon the climatic conditions. The results give an additional information upon the transparency of the atmosphere in different wavelength regions and suggest to be a help for climate modelling. A connection between the chemical composition and structure of aerosol particles and their water uptake at large relative humidity allows the treatment of problems concerning cloud physics as well as electromagnetic wave propagation in clouds and fog.
