Summary: | The report concerns the pulsation amplitudes associated with gas bubbles trapped in liquids by stationary sound fields at acoustic pressure amplitudes on the order of a few tenths of bar. Measured pressure amplitudes were determined using a calibrated probe hydrophone. Theoretical acoustic pressures were calculated using the parameters associated with the trapped bubble in the actual sound field. Five liquids were used in the experiment: water, ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, and a ten percent aqueous glycerin solution. The gas bubbles were trapped in the host liquid by a balance of acoustic and buoyant forces. Two models are presented which take into account the vapor pressures of the liquids, and qualitative analyses of these models are offered. (Modified author abstract)
