Description
Summary:An important platform of the Navy oceanographic research and development effort is the Antisubmarine Warfare Environmental Prediction Services (ASWEPS) oceanographic aircraft. This aerial oceanographic capability has been applied in the public interest to a survey of Lake Michigan. An aerial survey of the lake on a 10-mile latitudinal track spacing was accomplished in the 8 1/2 hours and provided a near-synoptic sea surface temperature data block. The analysis shows a distinctive packing of isotherms along the western side of Lake Michigan, revealing a large-scale feature about which little was known and should provide a strong clue to general circulation of the lake. Supplementary information obtained during this survey included surface wave profiles, incoming and reflected solar radiation, meteorological observations, and precision cartographic photography of selected nearshore areas.
