Summary: | A broadband phase sensor whose d-c output signal varies in response to the relative phase between the antenna voltage and current has been developed. The sensor together with a control system may be used to automatically tune the antenna to resonance. The improved sensor is similar to conventional FM discriminators and to general-purpose phase indicators. It produces a d-c output voltage of positive polarity, zero, or negative polarity depending upon whether the antenna impedance is inductive, resistive, or capacitive. The d-c output voltage can be used to activate a control system which automatically establishes antenna resonance at any frequency. Design criteria are given for the choice of the sensor circuitry parameters in order to obtain optimum electrical performance over broad frequency ranges. (Author) |
