Summary:The Marine Air Ground Task Force Commander faces many challenges in the future operational environment. He must be prepared to address the full range of contingencies the future will undoubtedly present. This paper attempts to answer a critical question: can non-lethal weapons assist the MAGTF Commander to achieve his desired end state in the 2025 operational environment? This thesis argues that without a shift in culture and compelling new ideas, non-lethal weapons will remain a specialty item that never truly reaches its full potential. Advancements in non-lethal weapons technology, coupled with education and training on existing systems, will be paramount to ensure that non-lethal weapons are being employed to increase the likelihood of mission success. Creative and innovative mindsets that see the value in this technology will be necessary to adapt to every changing environment, and allow MAGTFs to prevail in the future operating environment. This study will address issues surrounding the employment of non-lethal weapons, and analyze several case studies to develop an answer to the primary research question. In conclusion, the reader will note the capability of non-lethal weapons, and determine whether they present a possible means to achieve a desired end state in the future operating environment.
