Summary:Aeromedical review of US Army aircraft oxygen design criteria and military specification indicates physiologic inconsistencies. Oxygen duration charts in use for U-21 aircraft are computed on the basis of military specification using inspiratory minute volume (IMV) of 13.12 liters per minute (LPM), normal temperature (70F), pressure, dry (NTPD). Current oxygen duration charts for the RU-21 aircraft using constant flow regulator have overstated oxygen availability of 62.3% at 10,000 feet and 18.7% at 15,000 feet. Type regulator and dilution schedule are listed for U-21 series aircraft. The current design inspiratory minute volume of 13.12 LPM NTPD is the basic design deficiency. The effects of the activity and stress of flight require an increase of design IMV.
