Description
Summary:Analysis of products from Li/SOCl2 cells during various modes of operation was carried out using cyclic voltammetry and infrared spectrometry. Infrared spectral data indicated that LiAlSCl2 and probably LiAlS2 are formed in cathode limited Li/SOCl2 cells during forced overdischarge and resistive load overdischarge. These compounds are formed from the reaction of Li2S, produced in the cell under these operational modes, with LiAlCl4. It has been found that the lithium thioaluminum compounds can be prepared from the reaction between Li2S and AlCl3. Analysis of products from cells utilizing Li2O/AlCl3 based electrolytes did not show any significantly different products after overdischarge or constant current 'charge'. preliminary studies showed that Li2S/AlCl3 based electrolytes may be useful as alternatives to LiAlCl4 in Li/SOCl2 batteries.
