Summary: | The first successful use of satellite-derived soundings in the stratospheric analysis models of the Air Force Global Weather Central (AFGWC) occurred on 26 December 1979. A new procedure for the construction of the stratospheric first-guess fields was also instituted on that date. These new first-guess fields are based on satellite soundings.
