Since several basic questions and approaches were pursued in these studies, the report is divided into six parts: (1) the effects of stress on metabolic activity of bacteria; (2) the effects of stress on genetic stability; (3) the relationship of cell composition to survival potential;; (4) starvation and substrate-accelerated death in bacteria; (5) cryoprotection studies; and (6) survival and enumeration of bacteria in natural systems.
