Summary: | Single crystals of a model Ni-base superalloy were heat treated so as to obtain two different gamma prime distributions; solutioned and quenched and fully aged. Surface replicas of slip occurring after small amounts of plastic deformation were analyzed using TEM techniques as a function of crystal orientation. Slip bands were clearly composed of a large number of fine slip lines. These slip lines were spaced approximately 50 nm apart. A model which describes the mechanism by which these slip lines spread and form slip bands is proposed and substantiated with TEM thin foil micrographs of the deformed alloy. (Author) |
