Subcellular fractions of B. pertussis are capable of inducing resistance also. Boivin antigen, a trichloroacetic acid-soluble extract of whole cells, is capable of inducing resistance in the dose range of 0.2-2.0 ug when adsorbed to alum. Biochemical analysis of Boivin antigen indicated that the lipopolysaccharide and protein components were not complexed, but were co-extracted. the lipopolysaccharide (endotoxin) moiety was responsible for the antiviral activity and the endotoxin- associated proteins potentiated the antiviral effect.
