description A 3-day workshop on the regulatory evaluation of petroleum hydrocarbons in dredged material was conducted 13-15 May 1986 at the US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), Vicksburg, Miss. The discussions culminated in the recommendation of specific hydrocarbon compounds and the development of a suggested tiered testing approach for regulatory evaluation of hydrocarbon-contaminated dredged material. The compounds selected were 15 priority pollutant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: acenaphthene, acenaphthylene, anthracene, benz(a)anthracene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(g,h,i)perylene, benzo(a)pyrene, chrysene, dibenz(a,h)anthracene, fluoranthene, fluorene, indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, phenanthrene, and pyrene. The tiered testing approach consisted of first-tier acute toxicity tests and sediment analysis for the key hydrocarbons, followed by second-tier 10-day bioaccumulation tests. Other classes of hydrocarbons and biological tests were recommended for further research, with possible future inclusion in the evaluation scheme.
