Summary:Reservoirs provide hydroelectric power, flood control, navigation, water supply, fish and wildlife habitat, and recreation, and are thus a valued national resource that must be protected from the adverse impacts of human activity. These impacts include increases in algal standing crop due to the influx of excessive amounts of nutrients, reductions in water clarity, and losses of dissolved oxygen in bottom waters. Water quality studies reported here document the existence of eutrophication-related problems at Cowanesque, Tioga, Hammond, Whitney Point, and East Sidney Lakes, five Corps of Engineers reservoirs located in northern Pennsylvania and south-central New York. Excessive nutrient loads from predominantly agricultural water sheds have led to the development of algal blooms and reductions in water clarity. Recommendations for future studies to better define these conditions and possible causes are provided. Also included are recommendations for statistically sound designs for the accomplishment of these studies.
