Description
Summary:For this report, researchers surveyed armor noncommissioned officers (NCOs) experienced as tank commanders (TCs) and driving instructors to identify preferred TC commands and driver actions. The results showed consistent preferences for specific commands to control forward movement, but less agreement for pivot and reverse turn commands. One finding suggested that pivot turn commands used with M60-series tanks may be transferred improperly to M1 tanks. Twelve commands were recommended for universal standard use in driver training, and 15 other commands were considered suitable for optional use in more advanced unit training and in standard operating procedures. Most NCOs favored using some standard tank driving commands, agreeing that teamwork between the driver and TC will be increased, thereby reducing driver errors. A majority of the NCOs also agreed that driver training will take more time but that training will be easier to conduct. About 20% of the NCOs were not in favor of adopting standard commands. Keywords: Armor training, Tank crews.
