Description
Summary:Four 155mm, M864 base burn projectiles were used to obtain in-flight measurements of pressure and temperature in the base region of the projectiles. The M864 uses the base burn concept of reducing base drag by injecting gas, generated by burning propellant, into the base area. Measurements of pressure and temperature were made in the chamber where the propellant was burned; pressure was measured in two locations on the base of the projectiles. Pressure was also measured near th nose of the projectiles, and yawsondes were used to measure projectile yaw. Data illustrate the increased based pressure that occurs while the propellant is burning, along with fluctuations in pressure due to projectile yawing motion.
