Description
Summary:This report presents results of Phase I/II archeological survey of the Carrollton Bend Revetment, Jefferson and Orleans parishes, Louisiana. The project was undertaken by R. Christopher Goodwin and Associates, Inc., for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, prior to planned extension of the Carrollton Bend Revetment. A total of 70 ac were examined for cultural resources. Fieldwork consisted of pedestrian survey augmented by systematic and judgmental excavation of 86 auger tests and one, 1 x 2 m unit within the survey area. One cultural resource location, Location 1, was identified during survey. Location 1 contained an alignment of brick piers; the remains were not in situ. Additional testing demonstrated that these piers were deposited after World War II, and probably served to limit riverine cutting. The deposits lacked archeological integrity and research potential; in addition, they did not warrant designation as an archeological site. The location does not possess the qualities of significance as defined by National Register of Historic Places criteria (36 CFR 60.4 A-D).
