Summary: | Site response analyses have been completed at a number of large Department of Energy (DOE) project sites that are being analyzed for seismic safety. The objective of a site response analysis is to estimate the free-field ground shaking during an earthquake, that is shaking at sites that does not include effects caused by proximity to structures or topographic features, for a specific hazard level and set of site conditions. The requisite components for a site response analysis are: one or more design earthquake events with representative earthquake record(s), an idealization of the soil-rock system at the site of interest, and a scheme to generate response solutions to simplified assumed wave fields. Normally, the free-field ground response is presented in terms of either response spectra or the variation of acceleration or velocity with time. The alternative to conducting a site-specific response analysis is to use general sidelines recommended by Kennedy et al. (1990). |
