Summary: | The CE-SWG tasked the Waterways Experiment Station (WES) to perform a finite element analysis to aid in the design of the reinforced slope faced with the concrete revetment blocks. The finite element method has the ability of simulating the construction process and predicting the behavior at different stages in the construction process. In this study, the principal objective of the finite element analysis was to provide insight toward evaluating whether or not the predicted behavior of the slope would meet the project requirements. The direction and magnitude of foundation movements and forces in the reinforcement at different stages of construction were key items of information sought from the study. The effect of reinforcement stiffness on the slope's predicted performance was evaluated as part of this study to assist the designers in the selection of an appropriate reinforcing material. All analysis reported herein were performed under total stress and undrained conditions. These results were applicable to the short term performance of the embankment.
