Description
Summary:The Bionetics Corporation staffed and maintained a research laboratory to support red blood cell preservation research at the Blood Research Detachment of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, 1413 Research Boulevard, Rockville, MD 20850. Contract staff completed data collection on two clinical trials evaluating candidate red cell preservation systems intended for eight week storage. Preliminary data evaluation showed that neither the hypotonic storage medium system tested in the first trial nor the prestorage leukocyte reduction system evaluated in the second trial met the FDA criterion of at least 75% twenty four hour post transfusion red blood cell survival at the end of eight weeks of storage. We initiated a third clinical trial to evaluate the effects on red cell survival of twenty-four hours at room temperature either early or late in the storage of AS-5 preserved red cells. We also completed an in vitro study evaluating the effect of warming both early and late in storage of CPDA-1 preserved red cells. Warming for twenty-four hours at 25 deg C appears to accelerate the storage lesion equivalent to a week in the refrigerator. The Bionetics Corporation advanced the Blood Research Detachment's mission.
