Summary: | This report presents the results of the second year of effort on this project, as well as a brief compilation of the most important results of year 1. In particular, Section 2 presents a study of statistical methods of homogenization of interface parameters. Of particular interest are such issues as extraction of surface statistics from profilometric data, calculation of asperity distribution for random surfaces, and the practical calculation of expected macroscopic parameters from a microasperity analysis. In Section 3, a detailed formation of the boundary value problem representing the deformation of a surface asperity is developed. This formulation includes elastic and viscoelastoplastic material properties, damage modeling a nonpenetration condition of the contact plane, and boundary conditions resulting from adhesion forces and sliding resistance of the interface. Section 4 presents the background of the adaptive finite element technology developed for the analysis of the deformation of a microasperity. A general idea of the hp-adaptive finite element methodology is discussed in this section, together with a detailed presentation of the numerical algorithms used for the solution of elastic and viscoplastic contact problems. |
