Description
Summary:The least tern (Sterna antillarum) is a neotropical migrant species that primarily breeds along coastal waterways of the United States and winters in Central and South America. The interior population of the least tern was listed as Federally endangered in 1985 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, primarily due to habitat alteration and destruction. Interior least terns are the smallest of North American terns and breed and nest in colonies on riverine sand and gravel bars along major river systems in the central United States. Although few southeastern U.S. military installations are located on rivers within the range of the interior population, installations with suitable habitat in other sections of the United States should benefit from this profile.
