Comparison of Portable Raman Instruments for Use in the Single CAIS Access and Neutralization (SCANS) Project

Summary: | The U.S. Army's Product Manager, Non-Stockpile Chemical Material (PMNSCM) currently uses Raman instruments to identity the contents of Chemical Agent Identification Sets (CAIS) in two fielded systems: the Rapid Response System (RRS) and the Mobile Munitions Assessment System (MMAS). The PMNSCM is now looking at Raman instruments to meet the needs of a new project: the Single CAIS Access and Neutralization System (SCANS). SCANS will consist of a man-portable Raman spectroscopy system for CAIS characterization, a self-contained system for the destruction and neutralization of the CAIS items, and a packaging process for final disposal of the waste. This report details the comparison of four different Raman systems and assesses their ability to meet the needs of the SCANS program. |
