Summary: | Nuclear isomers can store tremendous amounts of energy for long times and the prospects for a controlled clean release of this energy for applications have motivated considerable research. Significant insight into nuclear structure also results from studies of reactions that may cause a triggered energy release. The primary emphasis has been on reactions induced by externally-produced photons. These studies comprise a very narrow sub-field of nuclear physics that has often been poorly connected with the broader results of traditional investigations. This report details efforts under this grant to provide improved measurements of trigger processes for several isomers and to enhance the basic foundation of knowledge connecting triggering studies with the body of nuclear physics. The significance of the work is reflected by fifteen publications, including a result recognized by the American Physical Society as a top story in physics during 2000. |
