Summary: | Pan is a complex, interactive system that is both under constant development and designed to be user-extensible. Under these circumstances it is important to have a clear policy for detecting and managing system errors (as opposed to errors in programs being edited), mechanisms to support the policy, and guidelines for their use. This document describes our goals for error management in Pan, from the various perspectives of casual user, author of extension code, and author of Pan system code. It discusses briefly the current implementation (Pan 1 version 3.0), how we arrived at it, and some of its problems. Finally, it proposes a set of guidelines for future work on Pan.
