Summary: | The objective of this research was to develop methods for improving welded joints in high-strength aluminum alloys. Details of the work done during the period March 1, 1951, to March 31, 1952, on the analysis of wrought aluminum alloys for hydrogen are presented. A summary of the work done during the same period on modified aluminum-magnesium filler metals, welding of ballistic test specimens, and ultrasonic vibration of weld metal is also presented. A method of determining the hydrogen content of wrought aluminum alloys with a precision of + or 1 0.1 ml per 100 grams was developed. The external and internal hydrogen contents of samples of six commercial alloys were determined. In general, the amount of internal hydrogen was much less than that of the external hydrogen. |
