Summary: | Retinal imaging is key for diagnoses and treatment of various eyesight robbing injuries and pathologies. Included are retinal detachments, laser damage, CMV retinitis, retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, tumors, and the like. Historically, 'fundus' cameras were used for this function and these have been provided as physically large units requiring film, specially trained personnel, and generally only used by ophthalmologists or in hospital settings. The retinal camera of this project will revolutionize retinal imaging and bring quality ophthalmic care into routine medical settings. One version will be 'field portable' and hand held. Another will have additional capabilities and will be suitable for optometrists to be utilized for routine examinations as well as routine use in medical clinics. The unit for use in the clinics will be physically small and integrated into a slit lamp type mounting. Primary aspects of improvement will be smallness of size, simultaneous imaging of the cornea and retina for ease of use, high quality digital imaging, substantially lower capital and use costs, and a basic design which routinely implements Telemedicine. |
