Summary:ELECTRONIC FILE CHARACTERISTICS: 98 files; Adobe Acrobat (.PDF) and data files (.TXT). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 1 CD-ROM; 4 3/4 in.; 72.8 MB. ABSTRACT: The Naval Research Laboratory has developed a Volume Sensor (VS) to assess damage conditions within a space without relying on point measurements. The VS combines color and long-wavelength monochrome video imaging, narrow-band ultraviolet, infrared and near-infrared detectors and acoustic sensors to assess damage control events within a space. A prototype was demonstrated aboard the ex-USS Shadwell test platform in September-October 2010 and was found to be very responsive to fires while exhibiting a high resistance to false alarms. The overall performance was comparable to that of other advanced fire detection systems but also was sensitive to non-fire/smoke casualties, including pipe ruptures and gas leaks. Prepared in collaboration with Nova Research Inc., Alexandria, VA.
