Summary:This is a presentation of fourteen English verse translations which have never previously been printed, transcribed from a range of extant manuscripts. The translators are mainly little-known figures. Italian authors translated include Dante, Petrarch, Tasso, Guarini, Metastasio, and Manfredi. The selection is intended to suggest how further archival research might make more visible the extensive history of amateur translation of classic and contemporary Italian poetry in English, and how far from routine its products can be.
