Sex differences in behavior and pro-inflammatory cytokine mRNA expression following stressor exposure and re-exposure

Highlights • Males and females demonstrate markedly different plus maze behaviors, even 6 weeks after stressors. • Stressors elicit sensitized expression of IL-1β in males but not females. • Baseline sex differences for cytokine expression are found in the hippocampus.
