Summary: | Highlights • With only fish feed, tap water and iron sulfate as inputs, sustained lettuce and basil growth was achieved and no nutrient deficiency or diseases were observed. • With a daily feed input of 42 g per m2 of DWC beds, nitrate, calcium, boron and sodium accumulated quickly and only water exchange could control their accumulation. • Key macronutrients (potassium, phosphorus) and micronutrients (iron, copper, zinc, manganese and molybdenum), remained low in solution with concentrations below 10 mg/L and 10 μg/L, respectively. • Even a low daily water exchange rate of 3.6% implicated a high nutrient loss in the environment. • The production of 1 kg of vegetable consumed 244 L of water and 84.5 kWh of electricity and 1 kg increase of tilapia consumed 278 L and 96.2 kWh. |
