Description
Summary:[Display omitted] •The stress state of magnesium alloy plate was improved by crown rolling.•A novel method was proposed to inhibit the edge crack of magnesium alloy plate.•The method refined the grains and gets more twins in the plate edge.•The method showed promising prospects for its concise process and low cost. A novel process named progressive flattened antisymmetric crown (PFAC) rolling process was proposed to inhibit the edge crack of magnesium alloy plate. The FE simulation showed that, the tensile stress of rolling direction of traditional hot rolling (TR) was transformed to compressive stress in the crown rolling. Relevant experiments indicated that, during a three-pass rolling process, cracks initiated in the second pass of TR and propagated in the third pass. However, no cracks were observed during the PFAC rolling process. PFAC rolling process got equalized grains and more deformation twins in the edge of the plate which may be attributed to the different stress state from TR. PFAC rolling not only effectively inhibited the edge crack but also showed promising application prospects in industrial production of magnesium alloy plate for its concise rolling processes and low cost.
