Summary: | In this article, drawing upon our experience and related research, we will elaborate on these affective outcomes: motivation, a healthy self-concept, coping with subjectivity, dealing with a competitive world, and interacting with supportive role models. While it would be unrealistic to expect any academic competition to satisfactorily provide all of the benefits mentioned, we believe that parents, teachers, and administrators of middle school gifted students could use the present article to select academic competitions for their students and to translate the entire process of participation into a rich experience of learning and development. |
