Description
Summary:The State University of New York (SUNY) assessment initiative is an ambitious project that seeks to establish a comprehensive assessment program across the largest public education system in the United States, with over 413,000 total students. This article focuses on the principles that have guided the assessment of general education across SUNY from the outset, the challenges encountered along the way, and responses to those challenges. Ultimately, the authors hope that the lessons they learned will prove useful to other large university systems that are attempting to implement a meaningful assessment process that leads directly to improvements in teaching and learning, provides campuses with the autonomy necessary to ensure faculty buy-in, and meets appropriate accountability standards.
