Summary:Geography is a traditional subject in Bulgarian education, both secondary and higher. Some of the most eminent Bulgarian scientists were geographers and theirs are many publications dealing not only with geography, but also with history, economics, ethnology, ethnography, political science, urban science and other disciplines. Major changes have occurred in the recent times however. Although still taught in Bulgarian universities, geography has lost its applied context and has turned into a theoretical subject, not giving the practical knowledge and skills which are so much needed in contemporary society. As a result, Geography has lost both its appeal to young people at universities and its place as an interesting professional career. This article considers some of the causes of this situation and suggests some of the possibilities for overcoming the difficulties of this transition period for geography education at universities of the country.
