Predisposition of wheat and barley to fungal leaf attack by preinoculative treatment with ozone and sulphur dioxide
In two climate chamber experiments, the predisposing influence of a 6-day preinoculative exposure of wheat (two cultivars) to ozone (100-180 nl/l and 60-90 nl/l, resp., 7 h per day) and/or S O2 (100-120 nl/l and 80-100 nl/l, resp., continuously) on the development of leaf symptoms by different patho...

Summary: | In two climate chamber experiments, the predisposing influence of a 6-day preinoculative exposure of wheat (two cultivars) to ozone (100-180 nl/l and 60-90 nl/l, resp., 7 h per day) and/or S O2 (100-120 nl/l and 80-100 nl/l, resp., continuously) on the development of leaf symptoms by different pathogenic fungi was investigated. Mainly in case of Gerlachia nivalis and Ascochyta sp., less with Drechslera sorokiniana, the diseases were promoted by ozone. The influence of S O2 was different, sometimes exerting suppressive influence. In a few cases, the mixture of both gases led to a more serious promotion. - In a further experiment with barley, D. sorokiniana incidence was more promoted than that of Drechslera teres, and the effect of S O2 was less pronounced than that of ozone. -With both host plants, the different cultivars reacted quite differently. The results from these preliminary experiments led to the conclusion, that the predisposition of cereals to weak leaf pathogens such as G. nivalis and Ascochyta sp. is sensitive to certain air constituents |
