Description
Summary:Grafted vines of the cv. "Kerner" growing in nine declining vineyards and those from virological experiments in greenhouses and nurseries have been tested serologically by means of ELISA for four nepoviruses. Samples were taken separately for scion and stock. The majority of the tested vines from the vineyards was found to be infected by arabis mosaic virus (AMV) in the stocks, whereas the scions were AMV-free. Identical results were obtained with "Kerner" vines grafted on AMV-infected stocks and grown in the greenhouse. In contrast, serological tests on grafted vines, produced later with the same combination of scion and stock showed that "Kerner" scions were completely infected by AMV. From these results, it is concluded that the susceptibility of "Kerner" vines to AMV seems to be limited. Up to now, the reasons are unknown. With respect to the so-called "Kerner-disease" the question of the importance of eubacteria on one side and of AMV on the other side remains open in a gradually developing incompatibility which results in the death of the grafted vines
