Summary: | The thymus of indigenous and crossbred piglets consisted of a connective tissue capsule. The amount of collagen fibres in the capsule increased as age advanced from group-2 to adults in both indigenous and crossbreds. In the day-old piglets, the parenchyma was not differentiated into cortex and medulla. However, the same was divisible into an outer cortex and an inner medulla and their proportion varied at different ages. The cellular populations included mainly lymphcytes and reticulo-epithelial cells. Macrophages, mast cells, granulocytes and plasma cells were also present. The Hassall's corpuscles were formed by hypertrophied reticuloepithelial cells and were very common in medulla. |
