Summary: | The present work has been undertaken to study the diatom flora ofdifferent localities in The Greater Cairo. These localities were selected tocover different aquatic habitats such as River Nile, irrigation canals, drains, springs, pools, ditches and fountains. Physicochemical analysis ofwater samples collected from the different localities was carried out, asmuch as possible. Nitzschia palea and Navicula cryptocephala var. venetawere the most predominant and widespread taxa in these localities. Thedistribution pattern of the identified taxa varied significantly bothqualitatively and quantitatively between the studied localities andindicated changes in floristic composition. These localities could bedivided into 5 assemblages according to water resource and the dominanttaxa at each assemblage. A total of 140 taxa related to 33 genera wereidentified in this study. Of these, 11 taxa have been considered as newrecords to Egypt. In addition, 3 of the recorded taxa in the presentstudy have been considered as new records to the diatom flora of TheGreater Cairo. |
