Description
Summary:The authors found the highly ornamented azygospores of A. bireticulata Rothwell & Trappe (1979) inside the exoskeletons of oribatid mites (Acari: Oribatida), as well as free in the soil, in samples taken under a mixed stand of Solidago sp. and Aster sp. from a field in Pennsylvania. Acaulospora bireticulata spores inside oribatids comprised less than 1% of the total number of azygospores of this species retained on the 150 mu m sieve following wet sieving and decanting (Gerdemann and Nicolson, 1963), and centrifugation in a 70% glycerol solution. Mites containing zygospores were dead and in varying states of decomposition. Internal organs were no longer present, and appendages of some specimens were missing terminal segments.
