Ultracytochemical localization of acid phosphatase within deliquescing asci of Chaetomium brasiliense [Fungi]
Within asci of Chaetomium brasiliense, acid phosphatase activity is localized in epiplasmic vacuoles, spore-delimiting membranes, and ascospore walls. Enzyme activity appears to increase greatly at the surfaces of maturing ascospores as breakdown of the epiplasm progresses. Maturing ascospores are p...

Summary: | Within asci of Chaetomium brasiliense, acid phosphatase activity is localized in epiplasmic vacuoles, spore-delimiting membranes, and ascospore walls. Enzyme activity appears to increase greatly at the surfaces of maturing ascospores as breakdown of the epiplasm progresses. Maturing ascospores are presumed to contribute some of the enzymes responsible for the digestion of the epiplasm. The wall of the ascus deliquesces during the later stages of epiplasmic disintegration. |
