Description
Summary:This paper discusses the importance of aspects of human psychology in designing socially acceptable agroforestry systems, and uses logistic regression modelling to delineate the most important variables and suggest low cost extension strategies for stimulating the adoption of agroforestry. There were highly significant associations between tree-growers and non-growers (representing different degrees of adoption of agroforestry among farmers) and perceptions about change in the village commonland, restrictions on felling trees from own land, future supply of tree products from the forests, and attitude of the respondent towards agroforestry. There were also significant associations between agroforestry adoption and perceptions of the respondents about the change in the forest area around the village and about restrictions on transport of the wood in future. There was no statistically significant association between agroforestry adoption on one hand, and awareness of the source of tree seedlings and perception about the change in the price of the wood on the other. Logistic regression model shows that attitude of the farmers towards agroforestry and their perceptions towards restrictions on felling on-farm trees were the most important psychological factors affecting agroforestry adoption. The results demonstrate a need to consider important socio-psychological factors in designing socially acceptable agroforestry systems in different parts of the world.
