Effect of Essential Oil of Piper tuberculatum var. minus C.DC. Leaves on the Hepatic Microsomal 7-Ethoxyresorufin O-Deethylase (EROD) and 7-Ethoxycoumarin O-Deethylase (ECOD) Activity in Rats

Summary: | The essential oil of Brazilian Piper tuberculatum var. minus (Piperaceae) was analyzed and its effect on two activities of cytochrome P- EROD (CYP1A) and ECOD (CYP2A) were evaluated employing hepatic microsomal EROD and ECOD of rats. The oil was extracted by hydrodistillation technique on modified Clevenger-type apparatus. The major compound of the essential oil was germacrene D, germacrene B and iso - caryophyllene were also identified. The essential oil inhibited about 60 % of EROD activity in vitro with 12.5 µL per mL of reaction medium but failed to inhibit the ECOD activity even with 100 µL per mL of reaction medium. The study on enzymatic activities with the essential oil of this species showed that there was EROD inhibition, but no ECOD inhibition. |
