Summary:The hotel industry is taking steps to accommodate computer-using mobile workers after years of complaints about poor telephone lines, telephones with no data ports and desks located too far away from phone jacks. Some hotels now design rooms with laptop users in mind, even adding such sophisticated advances as ISDN lines into guest and conference rooms or wire them for Internet access via a local provider. The Renaissance Hotel in Washington,DC, has spent $25,000 wiring its conference and meeting rooms with T1 phone lines for fast Internet presentations. Marriott Lodging is working with AT&T to equip 9,000 guest rooms in 80 hotels with workstations offering two power outlets, ergonomic chairs, worktables, PC modem jacks and movable lights. The six Fairmont Hotels offer fax machines in every room, and Manhattan's Palace Hotel is renovating 900 rooms with oversize desks and multifunction fax machines. Such amenities are expected to become mandatory for business-oriented hotels to compete in the future.
