Summary: | Traditionally, the term page printer has been used to describe monolithic systems such as the Xerox 9700 or IBM 3800. The new generation of laser page printers costs as little as one percent of the older systems. Deskstop laser printers represent about ninety-nine percent of the 38,000 page printers shipped in 1984. Most page printers consist of three basic components: the marking engine, controller, and resident software. Sophisticated software, such as Adobe Systems' Postscript language, and components such as the raster image processor controller, are the heart of the new wave of nonimpact printers. Typical of the new generation of nonimpact printers is the Apple Laserwriter. Diagrams illustrating laser and ion printing printers are included. |
