St. Marylebone: Local Police Reform in London, 1755-1829
Historians of London police reform have been unfair in their characterizations of the decentralized parochial watch system that existed before 1829. Examining the situation in St. Marylebone in 1832 shows that the parochial system was not always synonymous with inept, corrupt policing.
