There exists only partial agreement in the scientific literature about how to define values. Consequently, it is difficult to compare research results from different investigations, and the reader does not know whether and to what extent he may generalize the respective findings. Hence there is a need for a theoretically sound and empirically tested approach which may serve as a frame of reference for comparing and integrating research results. This article starts from the assumption that Schwartz (1992) theory about the content and structure of values can serve this function. Na literatura cientifica, existe somente concordancia parcial sobre como definir e medir valores. Por isso, nao se podem simplesmente comparar os resultados de investigacao, e, por sua vez, os leitores nao sabem se, e ate que ponto, tais resultados podem ser generalizados. Por essa razao necessita-se de uma abordagem teoricamente solida e empiricamente comprovada que possa servir de ponto de referencia para comparar e integrar os resultados de pesquisa. Neste artigo, partese do pressuposto de que a teoria de Schwartz (1992) sobre o conteudo e a estrutura de valores pode desempenhar esta funcao.
