Summary: | The paper explores the Jesuit patronage of the Apotheosis theme heeding the traditional mechanism of patronage (here, defined as either external or internal). While the first two of the three cases analyzed show the conjoint – though not always in total agreement – endeavors of the external and internal patronage players for the production of the canonization drama (L’Apotheosis sive consecrata sanctorum Ignatii et Francisi Xaverii, 1622) and the construction of the Roman church of St. Ignatius, the third case looks at how the Jesuits were obliged to innovatively explore a way by which they could produce funds necessary for the completion of the pictorial decoration of the same church (the production of Pozzo’s treatise on perspective: De perpectiva pictorum et architectorum, 1691). |
