Summary: | At its outset, this article outlines broadly the Lacanian concept of imaginary, showing how it is formed from the mirror stage onward and branches into attitudes of rivalry and identification. Then, it is presented the rise of imaginary in capitalist modernity, be it in the relationship with the nature and the world of objects, or in the economic, social and political bonds between human beings. Finally, modern imaginary is articulated with the attitudes of rivalry and identification which rule the world of consumption. Keywords: Imaginary; Modernity; Consumption. O artigo inicialmente traca, em linhas gerais, o conceito lacaniano de imaginario, mostrando como ele se forma a partir do estadio do espelho e se ramifica em posturas de rivalidade e identificacao. Em seguida, e apresentada a ascensao do imaginario na modernidade capitalista, seja na relacao com a natureza e o mundo dos objetos, seja nos lacos economicos, sociais e politicos entre os homens.
