Summary:In this paper, we analyze Chichisbeu, character from Antonio Jose da Silva's (1705-1739) play O Precipicio de Faetonte (Phaeton's Fall), performed in 1738, at the Teatro do Bairro Alto, Lisbon, Portugal. Starting from different but converging theoretical perspectives, we aim to understand the underexplored dramaturgy of that time as well as Da Silva's joco-serious scripts. As a tragicomic form originally Spanish, the character of 'gracioso' is the main comic representative in this theatrical genre. This study aims to comprehend this character (Chichisbeu, in this case) within his relations with the 'galan' and the relation between the playwright's work and the precepts and techniques of theatrical writing of that time. Keywords: portuguese theater, dramaturgy, character, emulation. Neste trabalho, analisamos a personagem de Chichisbeu na peca O Precipicio de Faetonte, de Antonio Jose da Silva (1705-1739), representada em 1738 no Teatro do Bairro Alto, Lisboa, Portugal. Partindo de perspectivas teoricas diversas, mas convergentes no sentido de compreender a pouco explorada dramaturgia do periodo, tentamos um entendimento dos textos joco-serios do comediografo. Como forma tragicomica de origem espanhola, a personagem do gracioso e o principal representante do comico nesse genero teatral. Busca-se, portanto, o entendimento desse personagem (Chichisbeu, no caso) em suas relacoes com o 'galan' e a relacao da obra do dramaturgo com as preceptivas e tecnicas de escrita teatral vigentes no periodo.
